Statism as a Religious Fact

Back in the 13th century during the Middle Ages, the shift began. People began to look to the state rather than to the faith and to the church for direction, and loyalty shifted, for example, in England from the family, the community, and the church to the state. This was a part of the revival of Greek philosophical thought which stressed the state as the ultimate institution, and little by little, the state began to usurp more and more of what belonged to the family, to the community, and to the church.
